ICM redistributes chip-EV into dollar-EV accounting for payout structure — chips ≠ dollars near the bubble.
What is ICM?
The Independent Chip Model (ICM) calculates a mathematical evaluation of a player's chip stack based on the payout structure of a tournament. It helps determine the real monetary value of your chips at any given moment.
This is especially important at the final table or near the bubble, when chip values become heavily decoupled from linearly equivalent dollars. Players use ICM to negotiate equitable chops or evaluate decisions with high payout variance.
